Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include 10 original risks identified as having long-term negative health outcomes occurring across 3 dimensions - abuse, neglect and household dysfunction (Felitti et al., 1998). Practitioners and researchers alike have grown to refer to “expanded ACES” such as homelessness, community violence, or bullying beyond the original 10 ACEs. We will share results from a review of research from 2,680 initial articles written in the last 20 years which included a definition of ACEs. Recommendations will be made for social workers specific to bio-psycho-social assessment of childhood risk factors and school-based setting screenings and refining interventions.
